Class: Yoga for trauma with Sasha Sigel

Please join us for an hour long practice of yoga for trauma. Through yoga asana, we explore movement that feels good, okay, or “less bad” in our bodies. Through breathing techniques and meditation, we maintain a healthy nervous system. This class is designed to help relieve the effects of trauma, stress, depression and anxiety. Many of these practices help restore a sense of agency and being “safe enough” in our bodies. You can choose your own adventure and take the practice at your own pace. We aim to leave the space feeling more centered, relaxed, and present. Rest and breaks are encouraged, and you can always leave the space if you need to.

The Practice Coalition centers those who have experienced intimate partner and/or sexual violence. This is a space for trauma survivors who are curious about yoga as a healing practice. Those who have experienced any form of trauma, or no trauma at all, are welcome. There are no hands-on assists in this class. Beginners are welcome. All genders are welcome.

Classes are free.

Coming Home to Your Breath

Monday, 6:15pm-7:15pm EST April 29 - May 20

Teacher: Susan Raposo

Our breath supports us in numerous ways, such as regulating our nervous system, reminding us to stay grounded in the present moment and helping us feel more at home in our body. Our respiratory system is part of our autonomic nervous system, which means our body will automatically and unconsciously continue breathing without thought. That being said, the breath is the one part of our nervous system we can have direct influence on by regulating the control of our breathing. Yoga offers us the opportunity to do just that, and as a result, opens up a world of opportunity for building resilience. Familiarizing ourselves with our breath also provides us with autonomy when exploring a new sense of self after experiencing trauma.

This is a movement based series that will explore how our breath is affected in different postures and movements. We will explore how finding ease and release in certain muscles can allow the breath to flow more freely. We will explore how physical effort affects our heart rate and breath rate and how consciously paying attention to the breath helps to settle our bodies and minds. Variations will always be offered. Each class will end with rest allowing for quiet reflection.

Classes will take place virtually on Zoom or in person at House of Flow (147 Prince Street #208, Brooklyn). Participants are welcome to turn their video off if that makes them more comfortable.

*This class will be recorded, with the spotlight on Susan. If you are unable to attend live, replays will be available for 7 days. If you want the recording, please make sure to click the box that allows us to email you.
